Irum Taqi leads strategic efforts to advance comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) policies at the global and federal levels as Interim Director of Global and Federal Policy at the Guttmacher Institute. She joined Guttmacher as Principal Advisor, Global Policy in 2021, overseeing the Institute’s engagement with key global and regional partners and equipping them with timely evidence and analyses to influence SRHR policy making. Ms. Taqi has extensive experience in SRHR policy and advocacy, both globally and in the U.S. Prior to joining the Institute, Ms. Taqi worked at the UN for nine years. She led global initiatives and provided technical expertise to strengthen political support for maternal and newborn health, SRHR, and gender equality, resulting in policy change, at PMNCH and UNICEF. Earlier in her career, she advanced supportive SRHR laws and policies in the U.S. at organizations including Physicians for Reproductive Health, the Center for Reproductive Rights, and the New York Civil Liberties Union. Ms. Taqi built partnerships, developed organizational positions, lobbied policymakers, and delivered expert testimony in support of legislative proposals to expand access to sexual and reproductive health care. She also previously served as Deputy General Counsel to the New York City Public Advocate. Ms. Taqi received a Juris Doctor from Fordham University School of Law and a BA from Vassar College.
