This month, I’m proud to present Amref Health Kenya, who together with their partner PharmAccess Foundation, collaborated to change the healthcare landscape in Kenya through a universal health care model called Innovative Partnership for Universal and Sustainable Healthcare (iPUSH).
More than 75% of Kenyans rely on out-of-pocket expenditures to access healthcare, a situation made much worse by COVID-19. The goal of the program is to expand financial resilience in Kenya by empowering low- income communities to effectively access health services and save for any additional health expenditure.
The program included a socio-economic mapping of 300,000 households in six counties conducted by 2,700 community health workers using an innovative mobile platform, which identified 100,000 indigent households eligible for health insurance subsidies. As a result, 94,000 additional people are now insured in Kenya, and health data is routinely collected by community health workers for provision of quality health services. 40% of those households are now able to save for out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.
Amref Kenya is planning to use this program to advance the asks in the PMNCH COVID-19 Call to Action.
Thank you Amref Kenya for being a PMNCH partner for change!
