UHC2030

Working together for strong, equitable health systems that leave no one behind

Case study

This month, I’m proud to spotlight a long-time partner of PMNCH, International Health Partnership for UHC 2030 (UHC2030), the global movement to build stronger health systems for Universal Health Coverage (UHC). UHC makes quality health services available for all, ensuring people are not pushed into poverty by health care costs, and UHC2030 provides a global platform and space for multiple stakeholders to connect, work together and influence national and international commitments.

In commemoration of the International Universal Health Coverage Day on 12 December, we encourage you to review the upcoming State of UHC Commitment synthesis  and dashboards (to be released on 12 December) which provides progress of the state of individual country UHC commitments and an overview of global progress to facilitate cross-country comparisons. The review is political, country-focused and action-oriented and supports national accountability and advocacy processes to ensure political leaders are held accountable for their UHC commitments.

PMNCH is  proud to work with UHC2030 across a number of advocacy efforts, including the development of a toolkit to help strengthen health budget literacy, advocacy and accountability for civil society and other stakeholders in order to influence decision-making processes.  The toolkit also  promotes guidance for policy makers on how social participation can be used for the  inclusion of groups with less access to policy spaces such as women, children and adolescents, people with disabilities, and low-income communities. Calling to protect progress and address the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,  UHC2030 joined us at the official event for the release of an advocacy brief entitled Rise, Respond, Recover held at the annual UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July 2021 when Heads of State and Governments review progress towards the SDGs.

The Coalition of Partnerships for UHC and Global Health (the Coalition) was also launched during the Forum to unite health leaders and advocates in a common goal: aligning advocacy and accountability efforts to achieve UHC and advance the SDGs coordinated by UHC2030. PMNCH is a proud partner of this coalition to ensure women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health and rights are considered through high-level political efforts and strengthened SDG accountability mechanisms at global, regional and national levels.  Importantly, the next UN High-Level Meeting on UHC in 2023 will be a significant opportunity for Heads of State to reaffirm their commitments to UHC.

Congratulations to UHC2030 for making a real difference in the lives of women, children and adolescents! A special thank you to Gabriela Cuevas Barron and Justin Koonin, Co-Chairs of the Steering Committee, for their leadership to ensure women, children and adolescents and those most vulnerable are visible and heard. We are grateful to Joy Phumaphi, Co-Chair of the PMNCH Partner Engagement in Countries Committee serving on the UHC Movement Political Advisory Panel and Githinji Gitahi, Co-Chair of the PMNCH Strategic Advocacy Committee playing a critical role as the Co-moderator of the Coalition Principal Group.
