African Regional Convening to Support Parents and Caregivers

21 – 23 June 2022

By WHO

The act of parenting is the process of supporting the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development of a child from infancy to adulthood. It refers to providing nurturing care in a stable environment that is sensitive to children’s and adolescents’ needs, protects them from threats, provides opportunities for learning, with interactions that are responsive and playful, emotionally supportive, and developmentally stimulating.  When safe, sustainable, and nurturing relationships are established between children in the first two decades of life and their parents or caregivers, these relationships deliver lifelong impacts.  Support to effective parenting and caregiving has a long history and a rigorous evidence base demonstrating lifelong impacts on children, youth and adult wellbeing and development.

In response to the challenges posed to families and children by the COVID-19 pandemic, a coalition of partners including World Health Organization (WHO)UNICEF, Parenting for Lifelong Health (PLH), the Early Childhood Development Action Network (ECDAN)The African Early Childhood Network (AfECN) and the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children (EVAC) established the Global Initiative to Support Parents.  The mission of the initiative is to promote the development and scale of innovative, evidence-based parenting support programs to create environments that enable children’s wellbeing and health through global advocacy and country-level support.

The Global Initiative to Support Parents partners will be convening six regional conferences to develop a common understanding of evidence-based solutions and further commitment towards supporting parents and families. The regional convenings will culminate into a Global Summit, at the end of 2022, as well as a compendium of evidence-based case studies.
