The World Health Organization (WHO) framework for health systems strengthening focuses on six core components or building blocks of health systems: service delivery, health workforce, health information systems, access to essential medicines, financing, and leadership and governance. While leadership is recognised as critical, learning has been a neglected component of health systems strengthening. Health systems that implement structures and processes to enable continuous learning and develop individual capacity can set their own priorities, define their own frameworks for action, and optimise their use of existing resources.
Local leadership is essential to a Learning Health Systems approach. In this MCGH Forum we will hear reflections on leadership, learning and Learning Health Systems from participants in the DFAT Australia Award Fellowship ‘Leadership for Learning Health Systems in the Indo-Pacific’ program, run through Melbourne Children’s Global Health. As part of the 2-week program held in Melbourne, 20 participants from Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Vanuatu and Vietnam will co-design Learning Health Systems initiatives to implement in their context over the next 12-months. Please come and meet the Australia Awards Fellows and join this special Melbourne Children's Global Health Forum to hear a number of them speak about leading in learning health systems in their countries and contexts. Speakers to be announced.
