In the pursuit of sustainable development, understanding the intricate interplay between population dynamics and broader socio-economic progress is paramount. The Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) stands as a seminal document guiding policies and actions towards achieving sustainable development goals. As we embark on the Decade of Action and Delivery for Sustainable Development, it is imperative to assess the status of the ICPD Programme of Action's implementation and its contribution to the follow-up and review mechanisms of the 2030 Agenda.

This concept note proposes an in-depth exploration into the nexus between the ICPD Programme of Action and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with a focus on evaluating the progress made, identifying gaps, and delineating pathways for more effective integration moving forward.

Key Themes

Holistic Development

Understanding how population dynamics intersect with various dimensions of sustainable development, including health, education, gender equality, economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social equity.

Policy Integration

Analysing the extent to which the principles and objectives outlined in the ICPD Programme of Action have been mainstreamed into national policies and development strategies, and their alignment with the targets of the 2030 Agenda.

Data and Indicators

Assessing the availability, quality, and utilization of data related to population dynamics, reproductive health, and gender equality in monitoring progress towards both ICPD and 2030 Agenda targets.

Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement

Exploring the role of partnerships between governments, civil society organizations, academia, and the private sector in advancing the goals of the ICPD Programme of Action and the 2030 Agenda.

Leave No One Behind

Examining the efforts to address the needs and rights of marginalized and vulnerable populations, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and migrants, within the frameworks of both ICPD and the 2030 Agenda.

Through a comprehensive analysis of these themes, this initiative aims to provide actionable insights and recommendations for policymakers, practitioners, and advocates to strengthen the integration of population dynamics into sustainable development agendas. By bridging the divide between demographic trends and development imperatives, we can foster more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable societies for present and future generations.
