The 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will convene in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 5 to 9 April 2025, bringing together parliamentarians from across the globe to discuss critical issues and strengthen parliamentary action for a better future.
A Focus on Social Development and Justice
The overarching theme of this year’s General Debate is “Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Justice”. Delegates will engage in meaningful discussions, exchange ideas, and shape strategies to advance social development and justice worldwide.
Key outcomes of the Assembly will include:
- Resolutions:
- Peace and International Security: The role of parliaments in advancing a two-State solution in Palestine.
- Sustainable Development: Parliamentary strategies to mitigate the long-lasting impacts of conflicts, including armed conflicts, on sustainable development.
- Outcome Document: A comprehensive framework to guide parliamentary action on social development and justice.
In addition to these deliberations, statutory bodies such as the Governing Council, Standing Committees, and the Committees on Human Rights of Parliamentarians and Middle East Questions will convene. The Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young MPs will also meet, highlighting the importance of inclusive and diverse representation in parliamentary processes.
Advancing Women, Children, and Adolescents’ Health (WCAH)
As parliamentarians gather to discuss justice and social development, Women, Children, and Adolescents’ Health (WCAH) must remain at the forefront of these conversations. Strong, equitable health systems are critical for advancing social justice and sustainable development, especially in conflict-affected regions where health disparities are most acute.
PMNCH urges parliamentarians to prioritize the WHA77 resolution on reducing maternal, newborn, and child mortality and morbidity and to recognize the central role of health in achieving peace, justice, and development.
Key recommendations for parliamentary action include:
- Strengthening health policies: Pass and implement legislation to ensure universal access to quality healthcare, particularly for women, children, and adolescents.
- Supporting conflict-affected populations: Advocate for targeted strategies to address the health and well-being of those affected by conflicts, including refugees and displaced persons.
- Championing equity: Ensure marginalized populations have access to healthcare services, addressing systemic inequalities and barriers.
- Engaging women and youth: Leverage the Forums of Women Parliamentarians and Young MPs to amplify the voices of these groups in shaping health and development policies.
