International Day of Parliamentarism: Celebrating Democracy and Parliamentary Action

30 – 29 June 2025

The International Day of Parliamentarism, observed annually on 30 June, celebrates the pivotal role of parliaments in representing the voices of people, advancing democracy, and driving sustainable development. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 (A/RES/72/278), this day also marks the anniversary of the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in 1889, the global organization of parliaments.

Parliamentarians: Champions of Change

Parliaments are central to shaping policies that address the needs of their constituencies, ensuring accountability, and fostering peace and justice. They play a vital role in:

  • Strengthening democracy: Ensuring inclusive decision-making processes and representation of diverse voices.
  • Advancing human rights: Upholding gender equality, equity, and the rule of law.
  • Driving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Promoting legislation and investments that tackle poverty, climate change, and health inequalities.

Parliamentarism and WCAH

At PMNCH, we recognize the critical role of parliamentarians in advancing Women, Children, and Adolescents’ Health (WCAH). Legislative and policy decisions directly impact health outcomes, particularly for marginalized populations. As highlighted in the WHA77 resolution on reducing maternal, newborn, and child mortality and morbidity, parliaments are instrumental in ensuring equitable access to healthcare and addressing systemic barriers to health equity.

Call to Action for Parliamentarians

On this International Day of Parliamentarism, we encourage parliamentarians to:

  1. Legislate for health equity: Pass laws that prioritize maternal, child, and adolescent health, ensuring universal access to essential services.
  2. Champion accountability: Monitor national and global commitments to WCAH and advocate for increased investments in health systems.
  3. Engage communities: Foster dialogue with constituents, particularly women and youth, to ensure inclusive policies that reflect their needs.
