Across global gender equality spaces since the Beijing Declaration, many commitments have been made to adolescent girls and to their meaningful inclusion in leadership and decision-making. However, too often funding and policy commitments lack transparency or measurable follow-through, accountability mechanisms are weak and girls’ participation remains symbolic. The failure to implement these commitments denies adolescent girls their rights and well-being.
This lack of accountability is not new, but it has been exacerbated by the current political climate globally. Over the last few years, we have seen many governments walking away from their commitments to gender equality and to girls, influenced by anti-rights and anti – gender actors due to widespread attacks on democracy and multilateralism.
As global actors convene and collaborate at WD2026, there is a critical opportunity to move beyond rhetorical commitment toward structural, measurable, and girl-centered accountability. This strategy session will focus on leveraging existing commitments and accountability mechanisms to drive tangible change for adolescent girls around the world when they need it most.
