Executive Director's Spotlight on Plan International

Statement
Reading time:

This month, I’m proud to spotlight Plan International, a key member of the PMNCH Partner Engagement in Countries Committee and NGO Constituency that strives to advance children’s rights and equality for girls by working with young people and partner organizations in nearly 85 countries. Plan International drives policy change at local, national and global levels using their reach, experience and knowledge. In 2022 alone, the organization reached 27.7 million girls with programmes ranging from improving girls’ sexual and reproductive health and rights, to education and protection in emergencies.

With PMNCH partners, Plan International has been instrumental in developing and launching the global #Adolescents2030 campaign. The campaign successfully drew attention to the health and well-being of young people globally and the various factors that jeopardize it. As a key campaign outcome, PMNCH partners committed to hosting the Global Forum for Adolescents in October 2023, as part of the new #1point8 Billion Young People for Change campaign, aiming for better policies, programmes and financing to address young people’s needs. As a youth-centered organization, Plan International works alongside PMNCH partners to meaningfully engage young people and their organizations worldwide in all decision-making relevant to their well-being.

Plan International’s bold and refreshed global strategy, All Girls Standing Strong Creating Global Change  aims to create a world where all girls know and exercise their rights and live the life they choose.   An ambitious agenda has been set to improve the lives of 200 million girls by 2027, so they can stand strong as they learn, lead, decide, and thrive in an equal world.

Special thanks to the great Stephen Omollo, CEO of Plan International, for his insight and leadership on the PMNCH Board representing the NGO constituency and kudos to Chris Armstrong, Plan International Canada’s Director of Health, International Programs, for his valued contributions on the Partner Engagement in Countries Committee and NGO Constituency as well as the Global Coordinating Committee for the Global Forum for Adolescents.  He is supported by Bekky Ashmore, Plan International’s SRHR Policy and Advocacy Adviser and Global Youth Engagement Lead.   I am also thrilled to welcome Kathleen Sherwin, Plan International’s new Chief Strategy and Engagement Officer, to the Global Forum for Adolescents’ Global Coordinating Committee (GFA GCC) and I very much look forward to working with her and her team in delivering the world’s biggest-ever gathering for the health and well-being of adolescents.

I am inspired to have Plan International as an ally and partner.  Together, we can work towards a just world that advances women’s, children’s and adolescents’ rights, health and well-being.
