Call to G7 to prioritize SRHR in UHC

Overview

PMNCH partners have come together to produce a consensus statement on prioritizing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for the consideration of G7 leaders who will be meeting in Hiroshima, Japan, on 19-21 May this year. This statement proposes a number of actions for G7 countries to consider this year, as well as for next year’s G7 meeting, to be hosted by the Government of Italy.

This statement, together with the PMNCH SRHR in UHC advocacy brief underlines the vital importance of G7 to take concrete steps towards comprehensive SRHR and gender equality. It builds on growing recognition and support for these issues during the 2022 G7 summit in Germany as well as the 2021 G7 Summit in UK.

G7 foreign ministers, meeting on 16-18 April in Nagano, Japan, included a prominent reference to SRHR, as well as maternal and child health issues, within their communique, noting in paragraph 22:

"We reaffirm our strong commitment to a comprehensive approach to mental health and psycho-social support for all and to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights for all individuals, including through strengthened coordination to advance sexual and reproductive, maternal, and child health, nutrition, and improved access to family planning. We are determined to work with others to maximize synergies and ensure ambitious action-oriented outcomes across UNGA High Level Meetings on pandemic PPR, UHC, and tuberculosis."
