Overview
In recent decades, significant progress has been made for women and children. Since 2000, global under-five mortality has fallen by over half, and the maternal mortality ratio1 dropped by about 40% worldwide. Many countries have enacted laws to protect women, children and adolescents from violence and discrimination, promoting gender equality and safeguarding children's rights. Women are increasingly participating in the workforce, contributing to economic growth and gaining financial independence. More women are holding political office, influencing policy decisions and advocating for gender-sensitive legislation. Innovations have improved health outcomes and service delivery efficiency. However, conflicts, climate disasters and instability are hindering progress in women’s, children's and adolescents' health, particularly affecting those in the most vulnerable populations.WHO Team
