Dear friends and partners,
This month brought a powerful spotlight on WCAH as the G20 Leaders Declaration for the first time ever recognized women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health as a key global development priority and commended the GLN for its leadership. This followed much advocacy from PMNCH and the GLN including at the G20 social summit where more than 800 global and local stakeholders convened to call for bold G20 action to cut preventable maternal, newborn and adolescent deaths; and at a ministerial breakfast convened on the sidelines of the G20 Health working group meeting where ministers from across the world reaffirmed that equity and accountability - not optional extras - must be at the core of our efforts. These and other key moments including an opinion piece: The World is Failing Women and Children, by the President of South Africa and PMNCH Board Chair in Bloomberg on the and by a powerful speech by the President at the G20 summit culminated in strong recognition of the need to act – an important statement in the current context.
This month also brought further powerful momentum: through the parliamentary dialogue convened in Nairobi, the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA), along with legislators and civil-society partners, committed to fast-tracking three critical bills - the MNCH Bill, the Breastfeeding Mothers Bill, and the Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill - to strengthen legal protections, service quality, nutrition and reproductive health rights across the life course.
Meanwhile, we launched our new success-story publication, Investing in lifesaving commodities for women, children, and adolescents: lessons from Malawi, which highlights how bold domestic investment in essential commodities - notably modern contraception and family-planning commodities - can dramatically expand equitable access and safeguard SRHR.
As we look ahead to December, we are full of purpose and determination. We eagerly anticipate our next session of READY, SET, IMPLEMENT! Delivering on Promises: The State of Accountability - where we will chart the path from promises to measurable action. We are also preparing for the next GLN Domestic Resource Mobilization webinar: Demystifying Blended Financing as part of our shared effort to build resilient, equitable health systems that leave no woman, child, or adolescent behind.
With deep gratitude for your continued partnership and solidarity,
Rajat Khosla
