PMNCH’s 2022 budget was set by its Board at US$ 10 million, which is a continuation of the budget levels to date. Through the collective efforts of PMNCH donors and foundation partners, PMNCH was successful in mobilizing almost all the resources needed for this budget (US$ 9.76 million or approximately 98%). A total of 10 donors made resources available to PMNCH for its work in 2022, including six governments, three private philanthropic foundations and one multilateral initiative.
In 2022, PMNCH welcomed back Merck Sharp and Dohme as part of its donor base and confirmed several new multi-year investments, including from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Governments of Sweden and Norway. This has amplified the support from PMNCH’s other existing donors, including the Governments of India, UK, Germany and Spain, as well as Fondation Botnar and Gavi. Given the challenging global circumstances, and pressures on governments and foundations worldwide, this was a very successful effort. A solid funding position in 2022 has enabled PMNCH to enter 2023 with greater confidence compared with recent years.
Numerous additional efforts started in 2022 to further strengthen and stabilize PMNCH’s funding position for the rest of the strategic period, particularly in light of the substantial flagship projects planned for 2023, such as the Global Forum for Adolescents. Numerous partner-led engagements have been undertaken in 2022 to expand the donor base as well as maintain relationships with previous donors, who may be in a position to fund PMNCH again in the future. This has included active participation in the Philea conference in Barcelona for private foundations, strategic online and in-person meetings, and introductions to new donors through partner champions. By the end of 2022, three concept notes were developed and submitted to new prospective donors, with discussions at an advanced stage.
In addition to resources being raised directly for PMNCH’s budget, work in 2022 saw partners engage even more effectively and directly in taking forward the implementation of PMNCH’s workplan. For example, PMNCH worked to develop funding proposals for direct support to lead partners of PMNCH workplan deliverables. These innovative ways of securing resources and time from partners for delivery of PMNCH’s workplans will continue into 2023.
